In the burgeoning mid-size, two-row crossover segment, the aging Ford Edge remains a sharp contender, with a quiet cabin and lots of standard features. It’s the best five-seat offering in Ford’s SUV lineup, occupying the real estate between the all-new Escape and fresh Explorer. The interior looks a bit long in the tooth, but the seats are cushy and the cabin is hushed, with enough space to comfortably contain four adults. The two flavors of powertrain satisfy distinctive tastes: a fuel-efficient 250 horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder or the Edge ST’s peppy twin-turbo V-6 and its class-leading 335 ponies. Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assistant features includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and automated emergency braking is standard on all trim levels. The Edge’s exterior design makes it hard to distinguish if it’s coming or going, but the progression through the trim levels accentuate its curb appeal.

Maserati shortened its full-size Quattroporte flagship to create the Ghibli luxury sports sedan for the 2014 model year, to compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz E-class, BMW 5 series, and Audi A6. The idea was to offer a stylish Italian alternative to those stolid German mid-size luxury cars, but the resulting Ghibli launched feeling like its development was rushed, with a few too many components borrowed from the Fiat Chrysler parts bin and a tail-end design that looks like it belongs on a Nissan model. The Maserati Ghibli had the opportunity to take on the German benchmarks, which can be as common as Toyota Camrys in some country-club parking lots, but there’s not enough genuine Italian brio infused into this car to make up for its quirks and corner-cutting.

After years of waiting for the mid-engine Corvette to make its debut, the pressure was on for Chevrolet to deliver a modern-day icon. As the C8-generation car enters its second model year, we are happy to report that its status is preserved—in fact, it’s elevated. The Corvette offers impressive performance, a 490-hp V-8 engine, and an affordable base price, which helped it snag a 10Best award and make our Editors’ Choice list. Both a coupe and a convertible are offered, and the Corvette’s two-seat cabin is spacious and comfortable for full-size adults. Beyond its spectacular performance, Chevy’s engineers made the ride supple enough for daily commuting and cross-country road trips, yet with the Z51 package the Vette is track-capable. Cargo space is limited, but golf clubs still fit in the back, and the front trunk (frunk) offers a deep well that’ll easily hold a carry-on suitcase.
